The predecessor of Chinese Health Code can be traced back to the "enterprise employee health code", which is an application developed by Alibaba to provide support for enterprise employee management.

Hangzhou decided to cooperate with Alibaba to develop Hangzhou health code. Zheng Rongxin, director of Hangzhou Data Resources Management Bureau, once said: "Hangzhou health code is a simplified version of Alibaba's enterprise employee health code." Tencent, another Internet company, has also invested in developing health code programs at almost the same time, and launched the "epidemic prevention health code" in Shenzhen.

The national government service platform launched the "epidemic prevention health information code", which is gradually connected with the health codes of Guangdong, Shanghai and other places to realize cross provincial mutual recognition.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China and the General Administration of Customs of the people's Republic of China jointly issued an announcement to release the international version of epidemic prevention health code based on wechat platform.

The Hangzhou Municipal Health Commission held a special meeting to promote the normalized use of health codes. It was intended that health codes integrate electronic medical records, health checkups, and lifestyle management data to match users’ health indicators with the health code colors to build a personal health index ranking.

Nowadays, the health codes in some places have expanded their functions to realize interconnection with electronic social security cards, support registration, medical treatment and medical insurance settlement in medical institutions, and others have been connected with the bus code.
